ASPIRE! 2016

Auction & Dinner

Saturday, March 19, 2016

5:30 to 9:00 p.m.

at Todaro's Party Center

When leaders of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve asked Rob and Alyssa Briggs if they would serve as the honorary chairs of the organizations's biggest fundraiser of the year, the couple didn't hesitate to accept.  "This is a big honor for us," said Rob, who has spent decades working with different non-profit organizations.  Alyssa agreed.  "After all, it's not every day that you get invited to help make a difference in the lives of nearly 900 young men and women who don't have the advantages that many of us have had growing up," Alyssa said.
Rob, president of the Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education, is a nationally recognized expert in foundation leadership, collaboration and team building.  He is the former chair of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and president of the Akron-based GAR Foundation.  He is partner, chairman emeritus and former CEO of the law firm of Buckingham, Doolittle and Burroughs.  Rob is a director of First Merit Corporation and is founding chair of the Fund for Our Economic Future, an unprecedented collaboration of more than 60 foundations and businesses in Northeast Ohio.  He also serves on the board of Independent Sector and is active with numerous other civic and philanthropic organizations.
Alyssa, who operates a content marketing firm, holds a PhD in journalism and spent 15 years as a professor of and director of journalism at Youngstown State University.  She co-founded the News Outlet, a joint venture between YSU, the University of Akron, The Beacon Journal and media organizations throughout the state.  Prior to joining the university, she had been an investigative reporter and won numerous state and national awards for her work.  Alyssa holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and a master's in English from Youngstown State University.  She is involved as a volunteer with several non-profits and sits on the board of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society.
Combined, the couple have six children and five grandchildren and their dog, Herman, who is half Great Dane, half Labrador Retriever and all-lovable.
